Dear Chesapeake Conference Family,

These are exceptionally difficult times for our world, our nation and our local communities. Many families have been affected by illness and even death from the coronavirus. And the killing of George Floyd last week in Minneapolis, along with other recent events, has resulted in protests and riots in cities across the nation. Many of us are mourning, fearful, frustrated and angry.

As the body of Christ, we are called to stand for justice and equality. The prophet Micah tells us, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Mic. 6:8, NKJV).

It is always helpful to pray for healing, comfort and peace for those who are in need. But we are also called to do justly. Our words and actions ought to demonstrate respect for people of every race. We are to value the life of every human being and be willing to speak up and engage our communities in ways that build up every person.

Our mission is to take the everlasting gospel to “those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people” (Rev. 14:6, NKJV). This purpose requires us to act with compassion toward all racial and cultural groups without prejudice. We are called to be the voice and hands of Jesus to all people.

Ultimately, we look forward to the coming of Jesus to bring righteous judgment and healing for all those who mourn. But while we wait, we are to treat others—especially those in need—as though they are Jesus Himself (see Matthew 25:40). I pray each of us will positively respond to the appeal of Jesus.

May the Lord continue to bless us as we pray and seek to do His will together.

Sincerely,

Rick Remmers
President
