The Executive Committee at its meeting on August 24 took the following actions and considered the following issues:
~ Carole Smith and Carl Rodriguez gave reports on Education and Youth Ministries within the conference and fielded questions from the committee.
~ Conference membership at the end of the second quarter stood at 13,490.
~ It was voted to recommend the retirement request of John William “Bill” Peeke on to the Columbia Union and North American Division after 41.21 years of service. Elder Peeke, associate pastor at the Atholton church, plans to retire at the end of the year.
~ It was voted to invite Vivian Ochoa, a member of the Hagerstown Spanish church, to fill the vacancy on the committee for a Hispanic representative. She takes the place of Linda De Leon who is relocating to Argentina.
~ It was voted to invite Elder Jerry Lutz to serve as the pastoral representative on the Columbia Union Executive Committee filling the place vacated by Rick Remmers when he transferred from pastoral to administrative ministry.
~ It was voted to support the Association Board of Trustees in approving the application for a bridge loan of $4.2 million for the Spencerville church for their new school project. The bridge loan is needed due to the fact that the closing on the sale of the old school will not transpire until the new owners (Washington-Spencerville Korean church) take occupancy in the summer of 2011. For updates on this project—the largest project ever undertaken by a single congregation—check out the church’s website www.spencervillesda.org and click the “news” link and then select the building project updates blog.
~ It was voted to deny a request from the Potomac Conference asking for a variance to conference boundaries in the Bowie, Maryland, area to accommodate a Potomac church planting project that had found an opportunity to purchase a partially constructed church facility. While denying the request, the committee did authorize administration to dialogue with the Potomac leadership about more clearly defining the boundaries. The current boundaries around the Washington metro area on the northeast and southeast sides are from points to points as the crow flies and do not reflect natural boundaries such as major roadways or county lines. The committee felt that any discussion of boundaries and variances should be part of a larger strategic plan for the whole region.
Condolences are extended to:
~ the family of Arvid “Al” Wennerberg who died August 25 at age 87. Following his retirement from a career in the insurance industry, Al worked for 14 years in the conference Trust Services department then retired again. “Al was a great source of encouragement,” says conference president, Rob Vandeman. “He had the profound ability to find the positive in people and circumstances and then to express it. On a professional level, his effort to help our constituents plan for the future will continue to bless this conference for years to come.” Al Wennerberg is survived by a son, George Wennerberg, and a daughter, Joan Franklin. Many remember when George Wennerberg served as associate pastor of the Frederick church before accepting a call to North Carolina. Joan Wennerberg Franklin is a member of the Brooklyn (Maryland) church where she is the membership clerk and bulletin secretary. The family has been hit particularly hard with two deaths in as many weeks—Joan’s husband, Thomas Franklin, died from complications of cancer just a few days before the death of her father.
~ the family of Mike Shacka, 81, who died on Tuesday of complications from cancer. Shacka was a charter member of the Pasadena, Maryland, church and served as the head elder there for many years. He will be greatly missed by his wife Ann, their adult children, and members of the Pasadena and Glen Burnie churches. Services will be held at the Singleton Funeral Home, One Second Avenue, SW, Glen Burnie, Maryland. Viewing on Tuesday, September 7, 3:00-5:00 p.m., and 7:00-9:00 p.m. The funeral will be Wednesday, September 8, at 12:30 p.m.
