Trust Services & Planned Giving
.

Estate planning is very important. You are given the opportunity to make thoughtful decisions about how your assets will be disbursed at your death and who will care for your minor children if you cannot. Yet, preparing an estate plan is something that many individuals put off. “Death will not come one day sooner….because you have made your Will.” Counsels on Stewardship, page 328. The Chesapeake Conference encourages you to consider the needs of your family and how you may honor God at your death.

If you do not have a Will, at your death the state will supply one for you according to state law. This would involve to whom your remaining assets will be distributed and guardianship of minor children. To make these decisions and have documents already in place is a loving gesture and a faithful stewardship example. The Trust Services department personnel welcome the opportunity to help you in preparing a confidential worksheet that the attorney uses to prepare your documents.

Additional estate planning documents that may be prepared at the same time are:

·     Advance Directives (Living Will): This document allows you to state how you want your body to be treated if you are unable to make those decisions during a time of unresponsiveness.

·     Health Care Representative Appointment and Health Care Power of Attorney: This document gives authority for your representative to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to make those decisions.  This can involve hiring of medical personnel, or transferring you to another hospital or rehabilitation facility.

·     Power of Attorney (for finances): In the event you are unable to do this for yourself, you appoint a representative to pay taxes, sell property, or pay your expenses.

All documents are stored in a locked vault. The department is regularly audited by the General Conference Auditing Service and a report is made to the North American Division Accreditation and Certification Committee. Departmental personnel maintain certification by yearly attending continuing education courses.
